World Indigenous Cancer Conference '19
Why Attend WICC 2019 ?
We invite you to attend the 2nd World Indigenous Cancer Conference (WICC 2019), taking place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada from September 16-19, 2019. The theme of WICC 2019 is ‘Respect, Reconciliation, and Reciprocity: Connecting Across Knowledge Systems’.
We would be honoured for you to join us to take part in workshops, hear from world-renowned experts in the field and share your stories of cancer with other members of the community. We will discuss the challenges of improving cancer outcomes among Indigenous peoples, and most importantly, identify solutions together. Programming and opportunities for culture-based learning will ground the gathering in Indigenous perspectives and understandings of health and wellness.
For those wishing to learn about working with Indigenous people, panel presentations will be available on health research with Indigenous people and implementing Indigenous cancer strategies across different regions in Canada. Don’t forget to attend our special Lunchtime Speaker Series which promises to share information about implementing research as a response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation ‘Calls to Action’!
Indigenous peoples around the world bear a disproportionately high cancer burden than non-Indigenous peoples, which is why WICC 2019 is so important. It will be a space for Indigenous community members, Elders, knowledge holders, traditional practitioners, health professionals, advocacy groups and researchers from around the world to come together and discuss ways to address cancer among Indigenous peoples worldwide.
WICC 2019 is a multidisciplinary gathering of researchers, allied health professionals, advocacy groups, Indigenous Elders/Knowledge Holders, traditional practitioners and community groups, and leaders from around the world to discuss innovations and advancements in cancer research with Indigenous peoples.
The conference aims to provide a forum for sharing new insights and improvements in cancer research with Indigenous people globally since WICC 2016. Events will focus on the critical challenges of improving cancer outcomes among Indigenous peoples.
WICC 2019 is a collaborative partnership with the Canadian Indigenous Research Network Against Cancer and host sponsor Alberta Health Services. These events are supported by the Alberta First Nations Information Governance Centre, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
